Lighting Metropolis – Where Photons meet People
The ambition of Lighting Metropolis is to create growth and make the entire region a leading living laboratory for light.

Lighting Metropolis is the first decisive step in realizing a vision for Greater Copenhagen as the world’s leading Living Lab for smart urban lighting. The aim is to strengthen the significant role lighting can play in supporting safety, accessibility, identity, health, and education for people in cities.

A second Lighting Metropolis target is to facilitate and support the Greater Copenhagen region tapping into the significant growth potential of these areas as they expand globally and exponentially.

Raising the bar for innovation

Lighting Metropolis puts Greater Copenhagen on the map as the centre where regions, municipalities, private businesses, and knowledge institutions collaborate to develop and showcase leading smart urban lighting, Greater Copenhagen is the destination for visitors looking to see the latest and best solutions in lighting and related smart city technology taken off the drawing board and into the streets.

Greater Copenhagen is home to strong research environments in lighting design, photonics, and biological lighting. Bringing the region’s unique competencies into closer play, the full potential of new lighting and smart city technology maximizes to benefit cities, citizens, and businesses.

Lighting Metropolis has made Greater Copenhagen the region, where global companies invest in the innovation, test, and demonstration of future solutions in collaboration with cities, scientists, and local companies.

A network of connected Living Labs, regions and cities across Sweden and Denmark collaborates with private, corporate partners, and scientists making city spaces and buildings available to development, test and demonstration.

Business Opportunities

Leading international businesses have their eyes on Greater Copenhagen as a potential showcase for smart urban lighting. Growth forecasts are excellent. The sector directly employs over 300,000 people. If we include everyone whose livelihood depends on the use of photonics – from workers using industrial lasers to doctors performing endoscopic surgery – 10 per cent of the workforce and as much as 30 per cent of the entire economy already depend on photonics technology.

Photonics is a highly dynamic and fiercely competitive global market that was worth €447 billion in 2015. At a compound annual growth rate of 6.2 per cent between 2011 and 2015, the global market has been growing substantially faster than the economy as a whole.

We are an advanced society with experiences in developing new ways of using light and smart lighting in cities. On top of this the Greater Copenhagen Region is home to major research centres focusing on photonics, as well as outdoor and indoor human-centric smart urban lighting, which further galvanizes the region’s position as an attractive innovation partner and potential international showcase.

Companies have the opportunity to work closely together with the region’s leading cities and researchers in an array of concrete projects that will test and showcase your best solutions based on the cities' needs. You will work closely with leaders in the public sector and, as you will be part of the Lighting Metropolis projects international branding strategy, these state-of-the-art projects could become a cornerstone of your international sales.
