Elsinore’s location makes it the gateway to the rest of Scandinavia. The ferries across the Baltic Strait are kept busy with up to five departures per hour in each direction. The possibility of a fixed tunnel link between Sweden and Denmark in the Elsinore area is about to be announced in a collaborative venture between the two countries.
In Elsinore, you immediately feel the breath of history. It is here that you will find Kronborg Castle and the ancient, atmospheric medieval city which attracts a large part of the 2.1 million tourists visiting the municipality of Elsinore every year.
The strongest local business sectors are the cultural, experience and tourism industries, the plastics industry, trade, textiles and medico. Generally, employment in these industries is on the increase. Among the largest companies in Helsingør are De Bavarian Nordic and Trelleborg Sealing Solution, which both have major expansion plans.
In recent years, Elsinore has undergone tremendous development involving the construction of significant, remarkable buildings and a large increase in cultural activities. The number of overnight guests has risen markedly, as has population growth. Among major recent landmarks are the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, designed by the world-renowned architect Bjarke Ingels, and the transformation of the former Elsinore Shipyard into a Culture Yard with facilities such as a cultural centre, library and venue.
Over the next 10 years, up to 13 billion DKK is expected to be invested in construction within the municipality. Some of the forthcoming major projects within the municipality limits include a new stadium, a health centre, several large housing projects and the conversion of a former industrial area to a residential area.
