A new bridge will create an efficient new high speed rail-link between Scandinavia and Germany.
The Storstrøm Bridge is an important link on the railway connecting Scandinavia to Germany and the rest of Europe through the Fehmarn Belt Link. The bridge also plays an important role on a regional and local level.
The new double track bridge will replace the single track bridge built in 1937, which will be demolished afterwards. Following the construction of the Fehmarn Belt fixed link between Denmark and Germany, the current single track section would be the only remaining bottleneck in the rail freight line between Scandinavia and Central Europe.
The construction of the bridge in combination with a new high speed railway line will reduce travelling time. Once completed, it will attract passenger and freight traffic estimated at 30-35,000 trains a year. This will reduce congestion on the Great Belt route across Denmark and on the rail line in question.
The increased capacity and speed will remove the bottleneck and allow for a more flexible time schedule. The Danish Road Directorate is in charge of the construction of the new Storstrømsbro and the demolition of the existing bridge.
